Sleep, Neurodegenerative DisordersAbstract
Sleep is a physiological process mediated by homeostatic components that are activated during wakefulness and suppressed during sleep. It performs several physiological functions necessary to maintain brain homeostasis. Neurodegenerative disorders are disorders of progressive loss of neurons of the central nervous system and they include Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and are usually associated with sleep disturbances. This review discusses the links between sleep and neurodegenerative disorders with highlights on the relationship of sleep deprivation and progression of neurodegeneration. Understanding this interplay provides the knowledge necessary for the prevention and treatment of these diseases. It also aids in the exploration of sleep-targeted therapies and non-pharmacological interventions
